The Body Noir

Artwork by Robert Giordano

This section contains black and white images of the human form. As in classic film noir, these pieces share the Chiaroscuro elements of heavy shadows, dark backgrounds, and strong contrasts between light and dark.

Many of these images were shot on black and white film. Robert mainly used bulk rolls of Agfa APX 25, along with some Kodak TMAX 100. He developed all of his film by hand using stainless steel tanks and reels. Before the launch of this web site in 2010, some of these images only existed as silver gelatin prints.

Today, Agfa 25 is no longer made and the art of black and white film development and printing is becoming a lost art. Although he embraces new technologies, digital cameras, and software, Robert continues to experiment with film.
